SPACE, TIME and POLITICAL ECONOMY

30th January – 1st February 2020, Porto

Católica Porto Business School – Universidade Católica Portuguesa

School of Economics and Management – University of Porto

The Portuguese Association of Political Economy (EcPol) announces the Call for Papers for its 3rd Annual Meeting, which will take place in Porto, at the Católica Porto Business School of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto (Winter School), on January 30 to February 1, on the topic of “Space, Time and Political Economy”.

All researchers interested in the study of economic phenomena are welcome, regardless of their own disciplinary field. The economy is a concrete reality situated in a geographical and historical context. Several spatio-temporal contexts produce a cultural diversity and richness which cannot be fully understood without a transdisciplinary perspective that takes into account the contributions of various social sciences, and also of the natural sciences that help us studying the material conditions of each territory. This view of economic phenomena stands in contrast to other views according to which there are universal models that can be applied to any geographical and historical context, typically based on the idea that human action can be explained exclusively as a process of optimization in a context of scarce resources that have alternative uses. The goal of this conference is to bring together contributions in which the economy is studied as part of a transdisciplinary perspective of human action.

We encourage submissions in the following topics, amongst others:

  • Economic phenomena and their geographical, historical and political contexts;
  • Economic institutions;
  • Distribution, equity and reciprocity;
  • The multiple scales of economies;
  • Economic ideas and policies of change;
