In memoriam of Terrence McDonough

Terrence McDonough

The death of Terrence McDonough on September 7, 2021 makes the current of Political Economy poorer. Terrence McDonough was one of the most important young supporters of the Social Accumulation Structures approach. He received his PhD from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His academic career began in the United States (Institute for Industry Studies, New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University, at Canisius College, Buffalo) and continued in Ireland (first at Dublin City University and then at the National University of Ireland, Galway where he was Professor of Economics until now). Terrence's scientific work focused particularly on the analysis of the stages and historical development of capitalism through the visual prism of the approach to the Social Structures of Accumulation. Other areas of his scientific contribution have been American and Irish economic history and the history of economic thought.

His main works are Contemporary Capitalism and Its Crises: Social Structure of Accumulation Theory for the 21st Century (co-edited by M. Reich and D.Kotz), Social Structures of Accumulation: The Political Economy of Growth and Crisis ( co-edited by M. Reich and D.Kotz), Was Ireland A Colony ?: Economics, Politics, Ideology and Culture in the Irish Nineteenth Century etc. He has authored numerous articles in leading journals of Political Economy (Review of Radical Political Economics, Economic and Industrial Democracy, Research in Political Economy, Competition and Change, Journal of the History of Economic Thought, The Australian Journal of Irish Studies, Science and Society, Journal of Economic Issues etc.). He was also a member of the editorial board of several political economy journals (Review of Radical Political Economics, World Review of Political Economy, International Journal of Pluralism and Economics Education) and was a member of the board of the World Association of Political Economy (2006-present).

Terrence McDonough had also come to Greece several times participating in conferences and scientific activities.

Moreover, Terrence McDonough combined his scientific activity with his active presence in politics and trade union affairs, especially in Ireland. He actively participated and supported labor and ecological associations and activities and was present in the processes of the Irish Left.

For those of us who had the pleasure of meeting him up close, there remains always the image of a dear colleague, a sharp interlocutor and a very warm person.
